Population

The Cape Girardeau Metropolitan Statistical Area (MSA) population 1/ increased from 70,185 in 1970 to 96,275 in 2010. That was an increase of 37.2 percent.

The foreign-born (FB) population increased from 190 in 1970 to 1,632 in 2010. That was an increase of 758.9 percent. The foreign-born share changed from 0.3 percent to 1.7 percent.

The share of the overall population that was native-born (NB) increased by 35.2 percent.

Sources of Population Change

The primary sources of population change are:

The first chart below shows the three population change factors for three periods adjusted for annual average amounts. Domestic migration (NDM) was the primary factor in population increase in the earliest period, and B-D was in the two most recent periods.

The second chart shows the same data but with an adjustment to reflect births to immigrants shifted to NIM. In it, the relative role of the three factors in population increase remained unchanged.
